The Joys and Health Benefits of Intimacy

It's a busy world with all of our insanely fast-moving schedules. I find many of us are neglecting and avoiding the one thing in our lives that may be benefitting us the most - a loving, snugly, sexual relationship. We're too busy, too tired, have other things to get done, time is going by faster than it used to and I have so much to do, I can't relax when my mind is traveling 100 miles plus a minute. Just no time to get "in the mood". In fact I love having my own room and my own bed because it gives me peace and quiet, and it just irritates me to have you touch me or sweat next to me because I just can't sleep. Sound familiar?

If you have a partner in your life that you can share sexual intimacy with, it may be the one thing that can improve longevity in life, maintain emotional health, and help with the physical ailments that we struggle with. Sex and orgasms can help with these, plus improve your relationship woes. It is a happy, enjoyable way to improve your health. It's true, sex with a loving partner of course is the best, but orgasm through masturbation can also be a good substitute, as it will release those all-too-familiar endorphins we read so much about. It also releases testosterone, which helps build muscle, so we can maintain lean body mass. Google 'endorphins' and read the health benefits for yourself.

You might consider changing “Not tonight, I have a headache” to “Yes, tonight, or right now, I have a headache." Most women have known for years that sex and orgasm relieves headaches. Orgasm releases the hormone oxytocin, which in turn releases endorphins - a natural opiate-like substance our body makes (and they are much more powerful than manufactured opiates). So, sex can act as a powerful analgesic (pain-killer).

Did you know sexual orgasm can also help you lose weight? Sex can burn 100 to 250 calories. It can take the stress, which puts weight on us, out of missing the gym. 30 minutes of Yoga burns 114 calories, dancing - 129 calories per 30 minutes and walking 153 cal per 30 minutes. You may already be aware that heart disease is the number-one killer of women. Eating a healthy diet, and keeping your cholesterol low and sodium in check are great ways to stay on top of heart health, but so is having sex. Sex is exercise that raises the heart rate and increases your blood flow to improve physical health and provide a clearer mind. Researchers reported in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health that having sex twice or more a week reduced the risk of a fatal heart attack by half!

It may sound weird, but sex can also help you minimize incontinence. Gynecologists have long recommended that women do Kegel exercises (flexing the muscles in your pelvic floor) throughout the day, but also during sex. Why? Not only can the exercises help increase pleasure, they also strengthen the muscles associated with incontinence. You can do Kegels anywhere (including during intercourse), so don’t be shy! Gently flex and tighten your pelvic floor muscles in the same way you would to stop the flow of urine or stop yourself from passing gas. Google 'How to do Kegel, excercises' - they are so easy.

Women and men in happy, healthy sexual relationships just glow and look healthier. It's like sex can make you more beautiful. I have always remembered a quote by Eleanor Roosevelt, "Joy is a woman's best makeup." Sex can releases a hormone known as DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) and it can boost the immune system, give you healthier skin and even decrease depression.

For those of us with trouble sleeping it seems frequent sex and orgasm will improve our ability to sleep and stay asleep. This is because orgasm in men and women causes profound relaxation, stress reduction and can induce relief from anxiety from the specific hormones released after orgasm. In a world where we are seeking "natural" remedies for all that ails us, sex ranks at the top and has been around from the beginning of time. Orgasm is one of the few things our bodies respond to without medication or drugs that can actually allow complete relaxation. Many indicate that they sleep more deeply and restfully after satisfying lovemaking.

The stress reduction alone can lower cortisol levels enough to not only relieve insomnia, but induce health benefits that reduce the chances of increased blood pressure, hyperglycemia (diabetes) and increased acidity in the abdomen (ulcers). Once again, we find that individuals who have sex once or twice a week show 30 percent higher levels of an antibody called immunoglobulin A, which is known to boost the immune system, making the cold and flu season so much easier to endure.

But, it is more than endorphins and antibodies alone that produce the healing, because the loving acceptance, cuddling, and hugs also heal. Again, please Google 'health benefits of hugs.' You'll see why your elderly mom or dad will live longer if they have a pet to love and hug. It's the acceptance and knowing you are needed, and this increases longevity of life. Simply put, we were not made to be isolated and avoid human contact and touching.

This is what makes all these 'no-touching' and 'no-hugging' rules that are being imposed on our children so concerning. A hug has always healed many wounds, from the beginning of time, long before doctors. We see our children with their faces in their phones and computers, texting a friend who is sitting right next to them. Asking a girl out by texting rather than holding hands and 'hugging' her close. Avoiding human contact and touching. The changes these days are shocking compared to my childhood when playing outside was safe and it wasn't automatically assumed that a touch by a teacher equaled sexual advances. That's another subject, because certainly we live in a completely different world today compared to 20, 30, or 40 years ago, and unfortunately we do have to worry more today.

I hope you all have a wonderful week. Remember how wonderful WaterWorks is for helping those of us who battle odorous vaginal discharge over and over. Read about it and see how it works on this website. It is an all-natural, 'green' product that is the only FDA-cleared feminine hygiene product for vaginal odor.
